KIRAN SCW celebrated GIRL CHILD WEEK and REPUBLIC DAY at Guru Arjun Dev nagar, putlighar, Amritsar. In this rally members and the children of KSCW distributed a small book let on female foeticide in G.A.D nagar.

The society celebrated dushera with children with an unusual way. it organised an art and craft camp on the day. the children very actively participated in the camp.. they made drawings on dushehra and also they were taught the relevance of the day.
dushehra is not just to burn the effigy of ravana, but is smybolic of the end of the ill within us, and is the victory of good over bad.

The UNDP's Human Development Report 2006 focuses on one of the most serious problems facing humanity today — the global water crisis. Water supplies are under severe stress. More than a billion people have no access to safe drinking water and almost two million children die every year for want of clean water and sanitation facilities. As a result of poor water resource management, high population growth, rapid urbanisation and increasing demand from competing uses for drinking, agriculture, industry and energy, the pressure on this finite resource is mounting every day. Climate change is also affecting the hydrological cycle, significantly affecting freshwater production and its distribution.

KSCW and DAINIK BHASKAR join hands to make masses conscious of problem of water depletion. The month of May was dedicated to this cause. Activities (seminars, Declamation contest, and quiz competition) were organized at Kot Khalsa and BBK DAV School, Yaseen Road, Amritsar to spread the message. KSCW team educated children and their parents on how they can contribute in water conservation with their little efforts. Other themes related to water and health, water pollution and how much water gets wasted by our routine activities were discussed. The team also gave a few tips on methods of water conservation. The winners of various competitions were given away prizes by the KSCW.
Tips to Save water

• Avoid leakage of water from the taps.


• Turn the tap off when not in use especially when you brush your teeth or wash clothes.


• Rainwater harvesting is the another method to conserve water.


• The water supply should be limited in those areas which enjoys the unlimited water supplies.


• Check the leakage of water in the toilets. Also get check the hidden water leaks.


• Educate the mind of the people in the rural areas to save the water.


• Promote the conservation of water through media and wall posters.


• Never throw the water unnecessary on roads which can be used for gardening and cleaning.


• Avoid unnecessary flushing the toilets. Dispose off the tissues, cigarettes and other waste into the bin instead of toilets.


• Use minimum amount of water to bath.


• Water Waste restrictions.


• Improvement in the water distribution system.


• Water your lawn only when it is needed.


• Use a broom instead of hose to clean the sidewalks or to wash the car.


• Capture the water that is leaking and repair it as soon as possible.


• You can use washing machine to wash clothes that does not consume much water.


• Donot leave the tap running while washing the dishes in the kitchen.


• Install small shower heads to reduce the flow of water.
  Benefits to Conserve water :
  If you save water it can save your money bills.
  Reduction in interior water use cuts waste water flows, especially overflowing of gutters which contaminates the environment.
  Environment benefits include eco system and habitat protection.

SCHOOL CHALE HUMmm-- APRIL ACTIVITES

Education means overall development of the child’s body, mind and soul-MK Gandhi .
Youth is the builders of nation therefore the future of India depends upon them and education is a means for comprehensive development of the society and its members. We as teachers, social workers. Our contribution as teachers, social workers, parents is to Channelise their Latent energies in a right direction educate and train them properly and prepare them for well rounded life society. With this objective in mind KIRAN society raised “EDUCATION CAMPAIGN” for the month of APRIL at KOT KHALSA, Inderpuri. The Society has taken initiative to teach the young children of this area and help them in studies through creative learning and also by providing them with free of cost study material ...

Following activities were undertaken by the society in the month of April.

Painting competition, general knowledge activities, extempore competition were organised and all the winners were given away useful study material as their prizes . other than this all the society sees to encourage maximum participation of the children in activites hence all the participants were given gifts as a token of encouagement.

PROMOTING HEALTH WITH CYCLING-SEMINAR

What does this roads entailed ( Roads are not for masses )

Cycling is one of the issue, promoted to archive healthy lifestyle. this was one of the central massage from all the speakers, the point was made well relevant from speaker Vibhuti , she spotlit that today seminar would be relevant , if the outcome of the seminar provide few practical suggestion on, how cycling can be made as practical mode of transportation in city.
This is ignorance, if we think the goodness of cycling is not known to community

The need is to know , why cycling is not used as mode of transport
The answer is simple , 16% of deaths on roads are of cyclist & pedestrian.
The argument is given that 16% is not 'on higher' side , as we see 27 % deaths are from 2/3 wheelers category. this adds up to 33 % in total for all 2/3 wheelers ,pedestrians & cyclist.
The cause of high percentage for 2 wheelers on roads ( i.e 71 % ) is due to failure of government to provide adequate & efficient public transport system. The total buses are just 1% of the total registered vehicles.

An apex organisation under the Central Government , The Ministry of Road Transport & Highway, main vehemence is on road that are suitable for hight speed traffic, which count only care, jeeps & taxis ( 13 % ) & LMV ( 5%) . for whom the driving speed limit can be above 100 Km/ hr. where els 71% use is with two wheelers , with driving speed of 50-60 Km/hr.

What NGOs should target , for bringing a change in road system for integrating safe cycling:
(1) Advocating formation of separate wing in , The Ministry of Road Transport & Highway , for safety of cycle & other non motored vehicles along with pedestrian.
(2) Identity roads of city with heavy traffic & speed , mobilize local authority to mark cycling & non motored lane on it.
(3) Make educational institutes & government premises 'ONLY CYCLES & PEDESTRIAN' zone.
(4) Get free parking status for cycles at all the parking lots.

In a bid to revive our rich heritage, customs, traditions, folk art and culture 'Amritsar VIRASAT MELA' was organised by Virsa VIhar from 4 march to 7 March 2010.

The festival comprised a series of performance's by some of India's finest exponents of music, dance and theatre. As amritsar (Punjab) shares historical memories accross the Border : Artists from Pakistan also participated in the event.

The innaguration ceremony of The Heritage FESTIVAL was held on 4 march by illuminating the city through JAAGO (Punjabi Dance, Gidhha). Various schools and colleges participated in the innuguration ceremnony with their teams. For the Purpose of Involving whole city in the mela Different routes were set for the teams From all seven Doors of the city.

The Mela also included literary seminar on Punjab. Art & handicraft traditional exhibition was another feature of the festival. The Craft Mela was also showcased in the precincts of gandhi ground which was a reflection of ancient folk handicraft.

Language is a medium of expressing one's feelings and emotions and Language loss is arguably the most pressing issue faced by contemporary nations.

Since all languages represent different ways of perceiving, mapping, and classifying the world, they act as repositories for cultural traditions and localized knowledge. The growing trend toward linguistic standardization threatens the existence of more marginalized cultures and ethnic customs, leaving only a few dominant tongues. In light of this, a seminar was organised on 21 feb 2010 by lok sahitya accademy on the theme " mat bhasha Punjabi chintan samagam). A wide discussion was held










on the theme by distinguished scholars of various feilds. Also a Documentary film was screened on the subject..

It is not only Punjabi language is facing a serious challange rather hindi, english, marathi or say it any regional language is facing a similar threat of survival as globalingulism is becoming dominant...
.
The issue is really serious but such discussion must be held with the notion of secularism keeping in mind that indian society is a plural society. So adopting a regionalistic approach than nationalistic one to show a concern is not a good idea...

meeeting with DC- ANTE-NATAL CHECK UPS FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

4 feb 2010-
.KSCW had a meeting with DC,showing concern regarding the antenatal check ups for pregnant women and hospital deleveries.
.
A field visit was conducted in GURU RAMDASS NAGAR and INDIRA COLONY to know the number of pregnant ladies and problems faced by them,and it was known that many of them were victims of anemia,did not go for hospital deleveries,and were satisfied with home deliveries conducted by untrained Dayi's. They said that they could not afford the expenditure of hospital deleveries and had problems receving birth certficates and the other documentation.
Another meeting was done with DC (7feb 2010) and the probelms faced by the pregnant women at various levels were discussed in the meeting. The DC gave his full consent for supporting and encouraging safe hospital deleveries.

AS PER THE CONCERNS RAISED BY THE ADARSH NAGAR SCHOOL AUTHORITIES AND PARENTS OF THE WARDS STUDYING IN THE SCHOOL, KIRAN SOCIETY OF CREATIVE WOMEN FOR MAKING THE SURROUNDINGS OF THE SCHOOL CLEAN, ADOPTED A QUICK ACTION PROGRAMME AND GOT THE GARBAGE DUMPS CLEAN BY THE MUNCIPLE CORPORATION the very next day. THE SCHOOL IS NOW FREE FROM THE STINKING AND INFECTIOUS SURROUNDINGS, AND THE CHILDREN USE THE SAME SITE FOR RECREATIONAL PURPOSES... :)

OCTAVA festival 2010

KSCW, VISITED OCTAVA FESTIVAL HELD AT KHALSA COLLEGE, AMRITSAR AND INTERACTED WITH VARIOUS NGO's WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE FESTIVAL. ONE OF THE NGO-WISE-Meghalaya,India interacted with the society members and exchanged ideas.
WISE centre is giving training of tailoring,embroidery,handicrafts,candle making,flower making etc. They sale products in exhibitions, fairs and fetes etc.

KIRAN Society, visited a school in Adarsh Nagar, Amritsar on 8 Feb 2010. The basic purpose of this activity was to conscientise children on their surrounding and environment, its implications and how they can contribute in keeping their surroundings clean.

A Small Quiz was also organised for students. The children actively participated in the competition and prizes were given away to the winners..

A small Booklet on female feoticide was also distributed to the teachers of the school. In the meeting with teachers of the school various problems were discussed including -dumping of garbage near school premises . The Society, assured them justful action in the near future.
